THE POST CARD – True Life Stories from an Edwardian Banstead Photograph This well-known image from 1909 shows the Banstead Old Well along with a few children. One was Maggie Muggeridge and she made a note of the other girls' names. Lewis Wood researched each one bringing to life varied stories from over 100 years ago. Maggie married a career soldier and travelled and lived in the far east for many years. Her sister, Aileen, recalls her time in service as a nursery maid and parlourmaid, describing the people she worked for and those she worked with in a 'downstairs' capacity. Emily married a Canadian and became a prairie farmer. But how do we know all this? Lewis traced descendants who were able to provide many stories and photographs. In two instances, the girls had written their own journals at the request of a granddaughter. All but one of the girls lived in Park Rd, Banstead, yet they all led such different lives. Most were born in the late 1890s and three of them lived to over ninety. This 170-page fully illustrated publication costs just £9.99 and if you are interested in reading about what life was like several generations ago, then this is the book for you.
